He should be able to play on high settings, or most settings on high. I bet.

I might be getting a new one as well, but not right now...is Nvidia better than ATI? I've seen quite a few people having problems with ATI cars the past few years, while nvidia cars don't seem to have that many problems. Is that true?

I would say they have better driver support, i agree. Hardly worth the premium on similar performing cards though.

You know, Nvidia and ATI only make the chip. Other companies like EVGA, BFG, Diamond, they design and make the actual card. So if you think about it, Nvidia is only a chip and software. Same goes for ATI, chip + software. What good is a company that only tried to live up to half the bargain? You get what you pay for. That's why my money will go to Nvidia, and always has for important things.

I don't think anyone cares about your opinion on which is better, personally I'm an Ati fan but i dont hate on Nividia either.

Nvidia and ati place reference designs in the hands of the companies for them to produce the cards as they would. Those two main companies design the cards themselves(ati nvidia). Some do however produce non reference cards with redesigned architecture and and perhaps a new style of cooler and in some rare instances and entirely new processor. Most new cards however are reference designs with reference processors and even coolers. Quality control lay in the hands of the producers of the pcb architecture as most cards fail from inefficient cooling or poorly laid out pcb designs.

For a lot of companies most cards come from Taiwan or China and most in the same factories. Some have even been known to buy and re sticker reference cards and ship them out under a new name. They are free to produce cards that are non-reference designs with a premium paid to ati or nvidia, thus the price mark up on those models.

Price is an arbitrary factor to me in purchasing an item, as price is controlled mainly by marketing and not production cost. Most cards, if you think about it, can be produced for roughly the same amount. If i can get a better performing card for a cheaper price, then I'm going to do it especially when I usually buy from a company with a good warranty that produces both Nvidia and Ati cards. (xfx) I went from a 4870 to a 260 because I could get better performance with the current drivers and the overclocking ability was higher for roughly the same price and would have gone in the opposite direction had the shoe been on the other foot.
