hmmm, so what do you guys think, a month or so and the new nvidia cards will start to drop the price of other cards? or should i be aiming for a new nvidia card.

    New nvidia card = waste

wait till the main cards drop (480) and check newegg over the next couple weeks. Then nail a deal on a 5850/5870 or even a lesser card.

If you are in a hurry to buy a card right now, ATI is probably the best way to go, as they have a full DX11 lineup. Nvidia is only just getting into the DX11 party, so if you want a good Nvidia card, I'd say wait awhile.

interesting, my desktop is not going to last much longer i think without a new gfx card, as it is i cant play any games :(.

im looking into the 5870 most likely, but not sure if it will fit into my case, my 8800 is really crammed in there, have to see the size i guess.

im pretty decent with computers beta, im 98% positive its graphical.

i will get little blue horrizontal lines. i will get blocks of color that appear/disappear and my screen flickers and says its recovered from a display issue, stuff like that.

anyways, what card would you buy if you had to buy one right now

I'd probably go for the GTX 275. Otherwise, I'd wait for the GTX 470.

    *edit*
Tiger Direct has one for $230

Have also seen them going for about that much elsewhere.

Yeah definitely your card download rivatuner and underclock it to see if that will make it last a little longer. And if you are feeling frisky undervolt.

You already know my opinion on buy now, 5850.
Hrmm or look for a good deal on a 9600 gso or such then turn around and resell it for equal or greater value when you find the card you want.

    Edit: lol @frisky visky

If you are going to get a 5770 level card get a gtx 260 its better. With a even a 680mhz core its basically a gtx 275. My 260 at 750 core will run better than a 285 in crysis. I got really lucky though with how well mine clocks.
    http://techgage.com/article/gigaby…per_overclock/5

That's a link to the 680 core 260 vs other cards. That being said 5850 in two weeks is still my choice, in fact an incentive i saw today was an open box 5850 on newegg for 221 shipped. It went fast though, so fast i couldnt buy it for myself...
But as you can see these things will go down fast. Down clock and wait it out my brotha, save yourself a hundred bucks.

Another link to another test with the same result.

Visk, ATI has recently released a card between the 5770 and 5850 in terms of price and performance- the 5830.

Read about it on tomshardware here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-5830,2564.html

Newegg had a $230 deal on the radeon 5830's, but I think it was one day only.

And to Verrater- 260's are better than 5770's in Crysis, but gtx 260 prices have risen and Tom's editors are now calling them overpriced, which is why they're no longer in the "best cards for the money" articles.

The GTX 275 is better than the ATI 5770 and 4890. For $230 you can buy a name brand card that performs well. Or just hold your horses for prices to drop.

That's because mass production ahs ceased as they are promoting the new line. Mostly the 275 and up.
You can buy used ones, re-certified, or open box ones for dirt cheap. 100-150 dollar range.

And ebay has a wide variety of new and used in that price range.
    http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=gtx%20260&_fln=1&_sc=1&_sop=15&_ssov=1&_sticky=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282&_mPrRngCbx=1&_udlo=100.00&_udhi=

That being said if you get a 5770 here is a good card to consider. I love xfx, you can get a cheaper card but you won't get the service or the warranty and xfx's double lifetime warranty will increase the resale value of your card.

i ordered a 5850. i also ordered a SSD for my operating system and when both get here am going to do a fresh install. i hear the operating response time, especially booting up, is much better on a SSD. anyways, with that video card, will my processor become the bottleneck in games? or should i not have much of a bottleneck?

im running on 6gb ram (it was 4 1gb sticks, but a while ago 2 sticks died, so i bought 2 2gb sticks, figuring the others could go at any time) and my processor is an old but still pretty decent (i think) Q6850 at 3gb, but i can overclock it (i dont for crysis because my gfx card is usually the bottleneck, but i do for supcom)

no your cpu will not bottleneck unless its older than a c2d also an ssd usually boosts performance very minutely but it does shave a few seconds off boot time, i think the new intel ones are advertised to shave 10 seconds off.

    Good choice.

and a +1 to comrades statements. I will add though if you are going for a super quiet pc, ssd is the way to go. They also last 10x as long as a regular hdd as they have no moving parts and another big plus is size you can hide them really well... When solid state technology reaches terabyte standards, it will be an amazing time.

SSD's are good. Just don't ever defrag it. Personally, I'd only need an SSD in a laptop or something. It would increase battery life for sure. But they also have a faster response time compared to magnetic hdds.

Let us know how the new cards performs in terms of a Crysis framerate comparison with your old card.
