Tweaking

One tweak that seems to have shown a huge impact on performance is running the game in DX9 mode. For the test, I ran the fraps benchmark for 60 seconds walking in a straight line through the map Atacama desert. Results were similar for the AMD video card benchmark, except even less of a difference was seen between DX10 and DX11.

Yeah the test settings were max visuals 1680x1050 on a [email protected] and a GTX470. A similar graph was seen for the Radeon 5770 except frames were all a bit lower for each DirectX version. Only in DX9 mode was 100 FPS broken easily. Kind of a shame that the older technology looks the same and performs significantly better...I'm starting to think this DirectX shit is just a gimmick to sell new video cards.

That is correct. You cannot use AA with DX9.

Anti-aliasing's benefits are unnoticeable except at super low resolutions. Unless your running 800x600 or something, I think you'll find that anti-aliasing's cost in performance isn't worth the slight smoothing of jagged lines. Besides, when jagged lines are made to appear as straight ones, it gives you a false perception of reality - causing you to shoot at rocks/walls for instance when it looks as though there is nothing in front of your weapon (just an example).

But to answer your question- yes, you need to use DX10 or DX11 for AA higher than 1x.

GTX460 price drops are currently in effect, but they may only last 3 weeks or so. Now is a good time to buy.
